Doreen and I have visited multiple homes of significance in Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, South Carolina and the Mansions of Newport. We have also toured National Trust Homes in England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland.
Most all in the US are fully restored and furnished with “period appropriate” furniture and décor.
Our recent tour of the Hegeler Carus Mansion was a refreshing, entertaining and educational experience.
We loved the fact that the restoration is a “work in progress” which gave the feeling of “exploring”. The furniture and décor being original to the house and seeing family photos from the late 1880s to the 1930s with family members in the very room with the same decor really added a connection with history and the family.
I might add that we received a very warm welcome that is sure to bring us back. We highly recommend this gem to anyone interested in architecture, history or just a relaxing afternoon.
