“Insiders Only” Tour Descriptions and upcoming dates
The Curiosity Tour: where Hegeler Carus Insiders are guided through attic rooms filled with exactly what you’d expect: stuff. There is clothing, steamer trunks, furniture, magazines, diaries, tennis racquets, books, and many more of the “usual” attic suspects. In addition, this special tour also showcases an astounding geological artifact collection, a rare medical curiosity, and the family Steinway piano. Enjoy the spectacular view of the entire Illinois River valley from nearly 100 feet above street level in our cupola. This tour is offered to Hegeler Carus Insiders on April 7, 2017 and October 19, 2017.
The Underground Tour: where Hegeler Carus Insiders learn the truth about the legendary tunnels under the Mansion, are guided through the basement rooms, weaving in and out between industry and artistry. See how the Mansion was built, the inner workings and technology used to create a comfortable environment in this large home, as well as remnants of the early days of Open Court Publishing. This tour is offered to Hegeler Carus Insiders on March 24, 2017 and September 14, 2017.
The “Do Not Disturb” Tour: where Hegeler Carus Insiders are guided for the first time ever through the “bedroom” floor of the Mansion. The tour travels through the most personal spaces of this Victorian home; these are rooms even the closest friends of the Hegeler’s would not have seen. Learn why transoms were so important, why Victorian couples had separate bedrooms, and why one bedroom in particular is both breathtaking—and heartbreaking. This tour is offered to Hegeler Carus Insiders on February 24, 2017 and November 9, 2017.
